Rommel, you significant bastard, ....."I read your book"!!! ~ Gen Patton
For a longtime (WWII), the Desert Fox pommeled Monte's men, chased them from one end of the African desert, to the other end, leaving the Brits demoralized. Rommel, left Monte's men in tatters, wiping out his armor division, leaving tanks & support vehicles smoldering in the hot desert sun, and beyond the smoldering carnage were his men, left to walk back, to link up with their other British allied units at a relative safe distance away from Rommel's Panzer Division, his playground.
For the first two years, Rommel's Panzer Division wreaked havoc on the British armor division led by Lt General Bernard Montgomery - Monty. February 14, 1943 Field Marshal Erwin Rommel found himself & his panzer division slugging it out with a formidable armor division in the African theater where he had toyed with Monty's armor division, like a cat toying with a mouse. Though these new tanks Rommel faced, lacked armory, but what it lacked, it made up for speed, and tactics.
This division was not the same division Rommel, and his men had grown accustomed to fighting, instead Rommel found himself & his panzer division retreating from this new armor division in the African campaign. While in retreat, Rommel paused a moment as he watched his remaining panzers slowly crept by, Rommel took out his field glasses, and peered through them, peering back at him was US General George S Patton standing atop of his Willy jeep. As Rommel studied the general peering back at him, he observed him take out a book, and waved the book at him, pointing to it mouthing "I read your book, you significant bastard"! A book, Rommel had written years before not long after the first world war had ended, a book on tactics, and a chapter on his personal biography.
Fellow screaming chicken, my brother was AA (82 ABD) who dubbed my 101 patch that, just brotherly bashing, as I called him Alcohol Anonymous (for All American 82 ABD patch). We both served & retired.
To answer partly, why you may not know the story, the English language is my second language, and my adopted parents (my mom & papa) emphasized the importance of annunciating my words to speak proper English. One of the ways to aid me in that endeavor was reading, we never had a TV at the ranch, just tons of books, and thus I became a bookworm.
Later in my young adulthood, I attended AMA (AZ Mil Academy) for WOFTS, learning to fly a 501B Huey, and learning to be an officer (half-assed :o) ). I used to order books from US Publishing Office), I had a thirst for war tactics, and battle planning, and USPO obliged me in providing me with those books authored by NCO's/officers who were in many of the battles we, Americans fought in. Same with history books published in the late 70s to mid 80s.
Sadly, many of the books I use to get are no longer available, maybe in US Printing Archives. I pray our president DJT see's the value of learning history, and non-fictional books. They all played a vital part in my young adult days, my military career, and as LEO Analyst. That story above stuck with me, like many others, for years. Chears, and may God shine His grace upon you.
